“I write whatever I’m feeling at the moment,” says Bath, England-based singer/songwriter Katrina Swift about her music. She doesn’t really think too much about the creating process, she says, though she does “enjoy experimenting with dreamy/atmospheric soundscapes, and I am greatly influenced by bands of the ’80s/’90s.”
Katrina’s most recent tunes range from slower, Sunday-morning music, at times cinematic and chill pop, to more lively rock that owes classic pop a debt of gratitude. More than one of her yet- to-be-released songs boasts the stuff of which hits are made, drawn together by Swift’s angelic voice and melodies that gently soar upon soft guitars, strings, and dramatic synth beds. Katrina Swift, classically trained with a high, gentle voice that vaguely recalls Kate Bush, performed in the U.S. and Europe in her teens, predominantly fronting ensembles and orchestras.
“I Walk the Earth,” Katrina Swift’s debut release on Earth Day 2022, is her take on the 1980s U.K. hit by Voice Of The Beehive. The song was written in the 80’s and newly recorded from afar, as the song’s author, Brad Nack, co-produced Katrina’s reworking of “I Walk the Earth” with fellow Santa Barbara, California-area musicians Zach Madden (State Flower) and Toad The Wet Sprocket bassist Dean Dinning, along with Bath guitarist Sam Allen (Nightswimming). With the guys in California, and Katrina and Sam in England, Swift notes that “I Walk the Earth” has “all been done through cyberspace.”
