Kawangis AlternaTribu is a neo-ethnic world music group from Palawan, Philippines, dedicated to celebrating and reviving Philippine cultural heritage. Established in 2004, their name, derived from the old Tagalog word “kawangis” (meaning similar or alike), reflects their shared passion for music, art, and tradition.
Blending rhythms with influences from African, Latin, Southeast Asian and beats mostly rooted from Filipino indigenous and folk rhythms, Kawangis AlternaTribu creates a unique fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds. Through the use of tribal drums, traditional instruments, chants in local dialects, and dynamic ethnic movements and dances, they craft performances that connect audiences to the vibrant spirit of Philippine culture. Their music tells the story of their land and people while pushing the boundaries of tradition to embrace the universal language of world music.
