Compared to Kelsey Coockson’s debut single California (March 2019), her new work represents a significant step forward in an artistic and emotional sense. Kelsey flirts with pop influences reminiscent of Calvin Harris, Sheppard and Katy Perry. For her previous material she collaborated with Dutch top producer Léon Paul Palmen, known for his hits with Suzan & Freek, Kraantje Pappie, Maan and Guus Meeuwis. She decided to keep it closer to home for her upcoming debut EP.
As befits a real DIY artist, she does everything herself together with her partner in crime Maurits Huijgen. Running a record label, promotion, artwork, press photos, videos, etc. - name it and they’ll do it. They run their independent label from their tiny apartment in the middle of Amsterdam and their studio at the famous Wisseloord studios in Hilversum. With over 1 million streams to her name and her face on Spotify's coveted Fresh Pop cover, Kelsey proves that you don't necessarily need a label to create your own success.
Both Kelsey and Maurits originate from playing in bands with guitars, bass and drums, but have gradually evolved into a more electronic sound. That doesn't mean they deny their heritage. In almost every song you can hear a crunchy layer of acoustic guitar. "That's the basis of everything anyway," Kelsey explains. "If you can't also perform a song acoustically, it usually isn't that good."
