While Foster isn’t exactly ‘new’ to music, the momentum behind the unmistakable balladeer’s critically acclaimed 2017 release ‘Deep Cuts’ and forthcoming 2022 anthology 'Somewhere in Middle America' has a host of new fans flocking to the raw grit and brutal honesty of Foster‘s remarkably mature, thoughtful, and unapologetic songwriting. Lush with real instruments, astute observations, and the deconstruction of one man’s head and heart, Foster has built a monument to the American experience and seeks to universalize the specific, and indemnify us all in the very specific ways that we are very much the same.
Wanting very much not to stray from his favored genres' organic roots, Foster makes a case for preserving the foundations of simple, well-crafted music while allowing it the chance to sonically breathe, as an intentioned accompaniment to a stark soliloquy pining over what the actual f*** is going on these days. Authentic. Accessible. Curious. Vulnerable. His timeless songs have a real opportunity to sit comfortably alongside the pillars of truth-seeking vagabonds who came before. He hopes to simply continue an age-old American tradition of giving difficult words to a nation seeking to reflect its own identity and attempt to shed some light on our collective better angels. A welcomed ‘new’ voice may just have us longing for our past and, at the same time, looking ahead at how we will preserve what has always been good, and right, and true.
