Few artists can say that Jonathan Richman and the television show Scrubs are both responsible for kicking off their careers, but the Gibson SG-carrying and stiletto-wearing Keren Deberg can. The self-described cross between Pat Benatar and Gwen Stefani left her native Miami for New York City one day after high-school graduation. Numerous club gigs around New York earned her a strong and steady following and also brought her to the attention of producer and former Cars frontman Ric Ocasek, who hired her to sing on Jonathan Richman's 1998 release I'm So Confused. A year later Keren was performing at the final Lilith Fair, and in 2001 she wrote an article for Seventeen magazine, documenting her audition for the open guitar spot in Limp Bizkit. Her debut, Gone, appeared in 2004 with tracks that had already been featured on MTV's Clone High and NBC's Miss Match and Scrubs. Keren also had a cameo on Scrubs, playing a singing nurse. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi
