Blues, drugs, fights, police, more drugs: with these ingredients you wonder why Quentin Tarantino never made a sleazy biopic of the story about The Red Devils, a gritty blues rock band from Los Angeles. With of course the unnatural death of singer Lester Butler – an OD on heroin and cocaine – as the grand finale.
Anyone who had anything to do with blues in the nineties will know their live album King King (1993). And anyone who happened to miss it will be reminded of it by KING KING KINGS with their energetic rendition of the music of Butler and his associates.
Just like their Californian example The Red Devils, KING KING KINGS are inspired by blues artists from the fifties and play with a venomous dose of funk and soul. Combine that with Hooijer's charismatic showmanship and you get a powerful cocktail that has already destroyed countless blues festivals and bars from Brielle to Groningen.
Under the leadership of producer Paul Willemsen, KING KING KINGS recorded the album Can't Keep From Crying in 2024 in the Electric Monkey studio.
King King Kings are:
● Jillem van den Ban - drums
● Eric Diepraam - bass guitar
● Wiendelt Hooijer - vocals, blues harp
● Martin Huurdeman - guitar
● Wim de Jong - guitar
