A LISTENING GUIDE
Listening takes time.
It is the intention that you listen to the whole album/work in its entirety. That is the reason that some of my latest albums have only one track.
Even though these works can be played over loadspeakers, you will get a more profound listening experience by using good stereo headphones.
Before you start listening, you might want to make yourself comfortable (i.e. an armchair, with a cup of tea). If possible, listen more than once.
In 2017 I started a concert series named USAL (Uninterupted, sustained, attentive listening). Listening is a skill that needs to be developed. Listening attentively, over an extended period of time, is one way of developing – and improving – your listening level.
My works are based on the fact: everything we pay attention to changes its character.
Remember:
To understand a work of art, you need a chair.
(Paul Klee)
If something is boring after two minutes, try four.
If something is boring after four minutes, try eight.
If something is boring after eight minutes, try sixteen.
If something is boring after sixteen minutes, try thirty-two.
(John Cage)
