Born in Sweden’s gourmet capital, Flen, Knut was founded in 1990 by Joa-Kim Vuori-Shān (vocals), Samy Merenpeto (vocals, guitar), Knutty Ilmapallo (bass), Riinii Heikko (lead guitar), and Tonni Raskas (drums). Their vision: to pair music echoing the slushy winters and introspective soul of Swedish suburbia with top-notch online merch.
In 1991, lead guitarist Riinii Heikko was replaced by Mikko Kehno, who in turn was replaced by Jarkko Tylsä in 1997. With Tylsä on board, Knut recorded their 2000 single Rakar Mig. After recording, Tero Viallinen stepped in as lead guitarist in 2001.
With Viallinen in the lineup Knut released the 2002 single Kylskåp after which Eero Rikki took over on lead guitar in 2003. In 2004, a light rig accident in Eskilstuna sidelined Joa-Kim briefly, and Vesa Risa replaced Eero on lead guitar. By 2014, Joa-Kim talked about an ambitious double album, but instead Matti Väsynyt stepped in on lead guitar. In week 40 of 2016, Knut discussed rehearsals, ending with Matti Väsynyt being replaced by Onni Huono on lead guitar.
In 2020, Riinii Heikko surprisingly briefly rejoined the band on lead guitar, but his return was short-lived. By 2021, he was replaced by Jani Turha, followed by Joki Jähmeä in 2024, and finally Markku Taitamaton later that same year.
After more than three decades Knut is more relevant than ever thanks to Gen Z discovering their music and merch on TikTok, dubbing them "Uslt" as Knut continues to soundtrack youth emotions.
