KOEK SISTA, a child of the African diaspora, a bonafide Johannesburger and New Yorker, is a performance artist and singer-songwriter preoccupied with the notion of love and its manifestations--good and bad.
Though her vocals are reminiscent of classic jazz vocalists of old, alternative music and sub-genres of more recent times have influenced how she understands music and its ability to evolve and transcend time and borders--both tangible and intangible. It is with this feeling that she describes her sound craft as “neo blues” or “sci-fi soul”. Whenever possible she enjoys sharing intimate collections of her emotive music in installations. With the help of a vocal FX unit, looping techniques, stunning harmonies and adventurous producers, she melts audiences with a unique and ever-evolving endeavour in musicality.
KOEK SISTA describes her music as an ongoing healing experiment with common themes including unrequited love, confusion, acceptance, clarity and joy. Her sound is [usually] low, slow and bass-heavy, though undeniably eclectic and poised to expand into popular global genres.Above all, KOEK SISTA has a sound that is sweet and twisted.
