Massachusetts-born singer-songwriter Kyla J makes music that feels like a conversation — honest, melodic, and unfiltered. Born with a visual impairment, she experiences the world differently, a perspective that shapes her songs at the piano or on guitar. Singing since childhood, her first song was Lady A’s “Need You Now.” Inspired by Miranda Lambert’s storytelling, from “Pink Sunglasses” to “To Learn Her,” Kyla pursued music, guided by her grandfather on piano and formal voice lessons, eventually learning to sing and play simultaneously. Her early performance of “To Learn Her” went viral. During the pandemic, she refined her voice and skills, later auditioning in Boston and traveling to L.A., earning a callback from the late manager Brett Radin (who worked with Dave Matthews and Tracy Chapman), receiving an award, and making key connections. In L.A., she trained with Grammy-winning coaches including Keli Nicole Price, worked with George Caceres, Stacy Rife, and Israel Bell, performed in a showcase, and placed third in a Los Angeles competition. Her debut single “Rise Above” blends cinematic storytelling and resilience. Inspired by the powerhouse vocals of Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco, and the melodic tones of Mike Viola, Massachusetts-born singer-songwriter and producer known for his heartfelt music and work with Panic! and other artists, Kyla balances vulnerability with showmanship.
