Laser Background is the Philadelphia-based psych/pop project of songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Andy Molholt (Speedy Ortiz, Coughy.) On Evergreen Legend, his fourth album under this moniker, Molholt explores new sonic & emotional territory, delving into themes of death, mistakes, and the ever swinging pendulum between the mundanity & complexity of daily life.
"I wanted to capture the constant uncertainty that I feel on a daily basis," says Molholt. "That oscillation between self-confidence and self-doubt is very real for me." On song Cerulean 20%, he elaborates, "Some days I feel like I'm already dead / other days, I'm just getting started." In conversation, he relates these feelings to the nature of the pursuit of music itself. "That mania, the push/pull between touring-life and home-life, is something that most musicians I know grapple with all the time." He continues, "While I truly love this life and feel lucky to be able to participate in a craft that brings me joy, I am forever looking at the greener grass and wishing I could take a little nap in an adjacent pasture."
Mixed & produced by Julian Fader & Carlos Hernandez (Ava Luna) and mastered by Emily Lazar (Vampire Weekend, Beck), Evergreen Legend will be released May 1st, 2020, accompanied by a full North American tour. Find more information about tour dates and the record at laserbackground.com
