Formed in 2019 behind the service counter of a Glasgow café, Late Fees are three friends enamoured with the music of the city who also happen to know Stuart Murdoch’s drink order. Inspired by Scottish staples like Teenage Fanclub, Camera Obscura and The Delgados, as well as modern indie acts like Car Seat Headrest and Jay Som, Late Fees make catchy, cathartic guitar music that’s both familiar and slightly askew.
The three-piece, consisting of Andrew Gordon, Michael Hamilton and Jack Mackenzie, recorded their first releases in 2020, collaborating via conference call and across time zones, between Scotland and Japan. The resulting songs touch on nostalgia, frustration and gold old soppy romance while incorporating elements of power pop, alternative rock and, inevitably, some of the “landfill indie” they grew up listening to.
