“Laura’s performance drew us into her musical world” Bill Remmes, Goodwill Cultural Center
Born into a family of musicians & artists, Laura’s earliest association with the guitar was with her professional jazz musician father teaching her basic chords on her Grandpa’s guitar, laying it flat across her lap as she was too small to hold it in the traditional upright position. She later studied under several notable teachers, the most influential being the internationally renowned Maestro Ricardo Iznaola. Her most recent project, Swimming with Swans: The Music is a complimentary slice of a larger multidisciplinary project comprised of literary & musical material created while living on the road between homes from 6/2009 – 6/2012. She was awarded a Puffin Grant to finish recording her Swimming with Swans: The Music - Goat Suite (Saga), released 3/11/2022. Laura’s passion is playing in mixed ensembles, arranging/composing pieces utilizing unusual instrumentation & introducing others to varied applications of classical guitar in music. Her 2007 album unexpected contains original & solo works for both classical & 12-string acoustic guitar with duo pieces featuring her partner Thereza Zacek Stephan on violin & mandolin. Laura is currently devoting more time to composition, collaborations, presentations & recording while dabbling in the ukulele, tenor resonator guitar, rainstick, bongos & the hammered dulcimer she & her husband made together.
