Drawing comparisons to PJ Harvey, Elizabeth Fraser and Chelsea Wolfe, Carbone dives deeply into femininity, mysticism and the changing cycles of the year and within ourselves on her lushly orchestrated, goth- and shoegaze-influenced fourth full-length album. The Cycle is a breathtaking concept double album that explores the emotional turmoil, trials and challenges the album’s protagonist faces during the changing seasons of the year.
She explains: “This record calls into question the linear patriarchal structures in our society and inspires us to honor our own cyclical nature, femininity and womanhood. To me, it’s very political work to look at your shadows and confront and integrate them, as our protagonist does on this album.”
Laura, who has toured the world with The Jesus & Mary Chain, performed at international festivals, collaborated with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, sang backing vocals on Swans’ acclaimed 2023 album The Beggar, showcases previously untapped depths and complexity as a songwriter, arranger and vocalist on The Cycle.
Carbone is also a sound facilitator and psychic medium who founded Cosmic Dreaming to share her intuitive gifts. In keeping with the cyclical theme of the album, she brought in sounds connected to each of the four seasons on several songs. She channels emotion and healing through her luminous vocals as well as crystal bowls and frequencies woven throughout the album with the hope of helping others tap into their own authentic voice.
