Stormwaiting evokes the distinct feeling that you’ve been invited to stroll through Barth’s unconventional inner landscape – it’s rooted in a sense of tradition though sometimes has uncanny, almost eerie moments sweeping throughout.

The softly expansive feel of opener, ‘Casita’ is seemingly at odds with the closeout ‘Family Chant I’, which is more akin to a focal narrowing – pulling the aperture tight –letting only what’s necessary to sustain come through. The sounds in-between belong to you, your interpretation is as much a force within this art as the music itself. Stormwaiting doesn’t really tell you how to listen to it or how to feel about it; that’s what makes it so good.

The result is a body of work that showcases Barth’s extraordinary talents as both a songwriter and a performer. Her voice is absent from most of the tracks; so when you do hear it, it’s impossible not to be moved by its almost spiritual resonance.

All of it is self aware and all of it is beautiful, with no space wasted.
