THE NEW KID:
Native Maléite, Lavakiyaa Abcy (Abcy) kicked off his career at a mere 16 years old, as part of the illustrious Maldivian music band ‘Olympians’. Singing alongside the voices of the mid-1970s Malé, he had found what would end up becoming the greatest love of his life: performing live.
THE FRONTMAN:
The 1980s and ‘90s ushered in The Maldives’ own ‘era of bands’, comprising local music groups who performed an abundance of cover songs for visiting tourists. Abcy was blessed to be hand-picked by leading maestros of the country to be the lead vocalist of local bands; ‘20th Century BC Band’, ‘Quick Sand’, ‘2 1/2 MC’ & ‘Amazon Jade’. For Abcy, it was a time of learning the showmanship required to become a true live performer.
THE VISIONARY:
In the early 2000s, Abcy met with a medical condition affecting his ears, taking with it his ability to perform with ‘big bands’. However, the performer in Abcy found a way to audiences through the establishment of his own band, <a href="spotify:artist:4DapRNLcN8RBWm1SHfZBsz" data-name="Out of Doors Maldives">Out of Doors Maldives</a>.
THE ENTHUSIAST:
Throughout the 2010s and into the ‘20s, Abcy has kept himself spirited, looking ahead to the future of the growing number of musicians and performers in Malé City, as well as throughout The Maldives. With a career spanning almost half a century, Abcy believes it’s finally time to unite his art of performing live with the world of playback music.
