Born to a Ugandan father and White British mother in Decatur, Georgia, and raised in the South West of England, Lawottim "Lawi" Anywar is a composite of indentities and tastes. Influenced in equal measure by walls of noise and deep, driving rhythms, Anywar's music trickles, ebbs and flows into a tapestry of shoegaze-tinged art funk.
Where his debut album, Everything's Fine, was an emotional reaction to capitalism, mundane day jobs, dreams, and failed relationships, his second album, Centenarian, is a reaction to the self. Thematically, Centenarian was inspired by conversations with his estranged father, about the desire to live to 100, and great aunt, who passed away peacefully in 2024 after living to 104 years old.
The record presents several meditations on the nature of trauma, grief, estrangement, anger, therapy, childhood and death, and ruminates on how we heal and make peace with our mistakes, before our time in the physical plane comes to an end.
Sonically, Centenarian represents an evolution from Everything's Fine's indie funk sound, instead manifesting in a darker, more metallic mix, with a doubling down on heavy grooves, long instrumental sections, oceanically weaving guitars, intense and pokey bass, tension, release, and cryptic, yet personal lyrics.
