Following the successful performance of his ‘Requiem Londinium’, Bern-based musician Lee Schornoz from Fribourg is back with a new album: ‘13 Black Country Greats’ was created with his long-time companion Zeno Tornado on vocals. He is joined by his brother André Schornoz on bass and Zoë-Më drummer Adrian Mahler. In ‘Wastelands (Deep Inside)’, the Italian Ida Elena sings a moving duet together with Zeno. Debbie Miller, who lives in Zurich and Northern Ireland, contributes her backing vocals to some of the songs.
The new album celebrates dark country, a form of country that seems to emanate from the loudspeakers of dark bars and foggy clubs rather than people line-dancing to it in a marquee. All the songs on the new record were written by Lee's former hard rock band ‘King Louis’, with whom he released two records. Lee rewrote all the arrangements and lyrics while preparing to perform his funeral mass between 2022 and 2023. He produced the recordings single-handedly in his Fribourg studio Caliber Club 2.0.
Although dark or ‘black’ country may sound like a newer musical form, when it comes to vocals, guitar and accompaniment, it's all traditional fare: Lee has been touring as a sideman and guitarist with his fellow musician from Bern as a duo under the name ‘Zeno Tornado & Fast Louiez’ since 2018, where they celebrate Country-music at it's best.
