Lili Chan has always been comfortable not fitting in, doing her own thing. Born to British and Japanese parents, she felt isolated growing up in her native Tokyo, fascinated by western music and culture. On moving to the UK and embracing raves, lost nights at Fabric, UKG and the unbridled freedom of cheap flights to European dance floors she saturated herself in electronic music in all its forms.
Always a singer, songwriter, infatuated by melody, and a pianist searching for chords that pluck at the heart, Lili decided after realising she missed home more than she realised, she could no longer deny her roots and Japanese heritage. She now celebrates her culture in every track, drawing on multiple Japanese historic musical elements including traditional instruments and scales. Her music sounds otherworldly, familiar but ultimately completely personal and unique.
From Akasha and Woomoon at Cova Santa in Ibiza to Fabric and Studio 338 in London Lili brings this distinct, meticulous Japanese flavour and sound to her hybrid DJ sets, across decks, samplers and FX, showing what a dextrous pianist can do with some multicoloured pads, constantly layering grooves and melodies.
Refusing to be put in a box she now releases across labels as diverse as HE.SHE.THEY, ThreeSixZero, Jaguar’s Utopia and Colorize while remixing pop giants Meduza alongside Moodymann’s Monica Bloom on Mahogani.
