Melbourne’s Longterm Romance is Bobby Bravington and Caitlin Perry. What began with locked eyes across Pony’s infamously steamy late night dance floor 8 years ago now forms Bravington and Perry’s second collaboration. Previously they could be seen holding down the rhythm section in Early Woman with Ben Montero and Hannah Brooks – Perry’s first outing with the drums – but playing and recording with the band led to Bravington overflowing with ideas. Originally starting with a solo side project under the name Bobby Brave, Perry’s rising contributions meant a name change was in order. In 2016, Longterm Romance emerged as a true collaboration between the two partners.
True to their name, Longterm Romance’s EP is four tracks of swaying, luxurious love songs. Perry grounds the tracks with her unerring drum beats while Bravington explores the distant reaches of melody, building a thick atmosphere with his Korg M1 and filling it with entrancing guitar solos, imagistic and political lyrics. Opener ‘Baby Bye Bye’ starts pensive and cool before spiraling into chaos, while on the other hand ‘Everything’ lumbers with a heaving rhythm, Bravington meditating over the refrain “Give him everything…” as guitar and drums clash against each other and on ‘Where Am I’ existential yearning leads to a furious finish. Each track builds from a somber open to a heart-racing psychedelic climax, inhabiting the wild spirit of love in all its facets.
