Loopdrop

Unusually, Loopdrop’s self-titled 2001 debut album featured electronic paeans to oranges (‘Naranja (Otra Mezcla)’) and tricycles (‘Triciclo’) as well as pretty electro pop elegies that translated as ‘If All The Stars Were Extinguished’ (‘Si Todas Las Estrellas Se Apagaran’). Loopdrop is the alter ego of Tijuana, Mexico-based multi-instrumentalist Rene Soberanis (b. Mexico). However, Soberanis seems to reject the explicitly Mexican music of the Nortec Collective (Panoptica, Ruisort, Fussible), which deliberately incorporates the traditional musics of their shared home town: ‘I’m totally apart from the Nortec Collective. I think the music that Loopdrop creates can sound as if it’s from anywhere’, explains the musician. The only overt signifier of Soberanis’ home country on his debut album was the track titles, which were listed in Spanish. Rather, the lurid sleeve of Loopdrop’s debut masked an anonymous and rootless music that carried trace echoes of German electronica and US space rock.
