Lorong Boys are award-winning Singaporean musicians who are equally at home playing on the hallowed stage of a concert hall as well as on the streets of the heartland – hence their group name, which takes after the Malay word for “alley” or “lane.” Adept at a wide range of musical styles they play anything from classical music to Broadway hits, from today’s Top 40 pop hits to jazz standards.
Founded in 2014, the band was born out of a deep friendship and a common love for music when David Loke (violin), Joachim Lim (drums and percussion), Jonathan Shin (piano, guitar) and Rit Xu (flute) were all schoolmates at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at National University of Singapore.
They burst onto the Singapore music scene in May 2014, when their spontaneous performance on the MRT train became a viral hit on social media. Since then, they have become feted for their vivacious energy, spontaneity and affinity for sharing music – qualities which have endeared to audiences everywhere on many sonic adventures. Being bold and innovative, they have toured various parts of Indonesia and appeared multiple times on almost every TV channel and radio station in Singapore. They were also featured in the SG50 The Gift of Song music video, and have worked with numerous home-grown artists including Inch Chua, Nathan Hartono, and The Sam Willows.
