With a voice that is both “sunny and passionate”, Portuguese tenor Luis Gomes has captivated audiences and critics alike. Winner of the Don Plácido Domingo Ferrer Prize of Zarzuela and the Prize of the Audience at the Operalia Competition 2018, Gomes has garnered praise for his performances across a range of operatic roles.

Gomes began his musical journey in his native Portugal, studying at the Escola de Música do Conservatório and the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. He later moved to the UK, where he graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and went on to the prestigious Jette Parker Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera Covent Garden. He has also been a Samling Artist and a Solti Academia and Gulbenkian Foundation Scholar, as a well as Verbier Festival awardee.

Among his many highlights on the opera stage, Gomes has played Rodolfo in La Bohème, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Don José in Carmen, Fenton in Falstaff, Alfredo in La Traviata, Duca in Rigoletto, Nadir in Pêcheurs de Perles, Azaël in L'enfant prodigue, among others.

Critics have praised Gomes for his impeccable legato, ringing top notes, and ability to capture the full range of a character's music. He has been described as a "naturally gifted singer" and his performances have been said to raise the emotional temperature of a scene "exponentially".
