Brought up among the Blue Ridge Mountains by cruel fundamentalist evangelicals, Maddi Mae found her own secular salvation in songwriting. She got her start as a five-year-old country gospel guitarist/singer/songwriter and spent a dozen years putting her “God-given gifts” to use in valley churches. Home abuse turned to teenage homelessness, and Maddi spent the next decade in a state of shock, unravelling years of brain-washing and trauma. With no god, no kinfolk, and no answers, she turned back to songwriting. For Maddi, songwriting is some kind of prayer – but these prayers answer themselves.
In the past decade, Maddi Mae has played nearly 600 shows – solo and as a member of psychedelic and folk rock bands. In September 2020, she released her debut six-song record called Quiet Corners, recorded with Kyle Millers of the band Tow’rs. On August 6th, 2023 (her estranged mother’s birthday), Maddi Mae released “die today.” On May 22, 2024 (her second wedding anniversary), Maddi Mae released “Two of a Kind,” an alt-country song dedicated to her spouse.
Maddi Mae is now the owner of a private, boutique music school and songwriting studio called Sound House in Remington, Virginia. At Sound House, she teaches 40+ students, mentors local artists and bands, and produces music through her itty-bitty DIY music label, Sound House Record Makers.
