It was a quiet night in June when singer-songwriter Maggie Pope picked up her guitar and sang 5 original songs into a handheld recorder, tucking herself within the walls of a modest bedroom closet so as not to wake her children who slept just down the hall. These home-recorded folk tunes would eventually find their way into the hands of Grammy-winning producer/engineer, Shani Gandhi, and then out into the world with the 2019 release of Pope’s first EP.
This debut solo offering, June Tapes, resonated authentically with listeners, many of whom noted a nostalgic quality to her vocals that seemed to harken back to voices the likes of Eva Cassidy or Joan Baez.
Despite these humble beginnings, she has continued growing as a songwriter, releasing new music and delivering folk tunes that have been praised by award-winning musician, Eryn Michel, as being “poignant, an invitation to reflect… it’s nostalgia for a place you’ve never been, a whisper of a memory you wish you hadn’t forgotten.”
Pope has emerged a respected songwriter, blending poetic lyrics with a performance that brims with introspection and vulnerability - sharing songs that invite the listener to embrace all the sundry of emotions that clothe the human spirit.
The coming year will bring more fresh music as Maggie Pope works on her first full-length album - songs written through life and love, heartbreak and healing.
