Mahina’s first real feat was an open mic moment at Mama's Open Mic. Her performance immediately caught the eye. Fueled by the raving comments and an ever-increasing self-confidence, Mahina started to write her own music. One demo, another one, and another. She posted, she deleted. The bar was high.
Big turnaround came when she played support in the UK for Swiss-based artist Danitsa. She left such an impression that Danitsa's entourage promptly brought her together with Evidence Music. It led to 'Harmony' (2020), her first single, a nice laid-back R&B tune with which Mahina immediately claimed a spot and indicated she would not be disappearing behind the curtains anytime soon.
2021. Mahina went on a music residency in Kampala, Uganda with the Nyege-Nyege-collective, where she explored with music and writing. She is now busy polishing her first EP, to be released in the spring.
"I started digging more into my roots," she says. "That, together with all the artists who have inspired me over the years has led to this sound. Working with Roselien (musician/producer) - aka Rosie from the block - has also taken the sound in certain directions. A particularly fruitful collaboration, I believe."
Between the music, Mahina took the time to perform in, 4-star reviewed (the guardian UK) music theatre « Dear Winnie » (KVS & NNT) & also played in short film « Le retour des femmes colibris » by visual artist Patricia Kaersenhout.
