Hailing from Umerkot, a city close to Tharparkar in the Sindh province of Pakistan, Mai Dhai is a bearer of a cultural heritage that connects back to the ancient Manganyar tribe. Mai Dhai is a forebearer of this age-old art of storytelling and folklore. At the age of 75, she is performing at her fullest and has been training a generation of musicians in this dying art form in one of the endangered dialects, "Dhatki" - a mix of Sindhi, Marwari, and Rajasthani.
Mai Dhai has performed all across Pakistan as well as internationally, including the prestigious SXSW festival and the international music series "Coke Studio."
She was recently honored with the Prestigious President’s Pride of Performance Award.
