Maistre Jhan (c. 1485–1538) was a French Renaissance composer who spent most of his career in Ferrara, Italy. A prominent figure at the Este court, Jhan was revered as a masterful composer and likely served as maestro di cappella. Though details of his life remain scarce, he was praised by contemporaries like theorist Adrianus Coclico. Jhan’s surviving works include sacred music and some of the earliest published madrigals, placing him at the forefront of that genre’s emergence. His music combines clear imitative counterpoint and rich homophonic textures, akin to the style of Josquin des Prez. Though many of his masses are lost, his influence lingered in early madrigal collections alongside Verdelot and Festa. Today, Maistre Jhan is remembered as a key transitional figure between the late Franco-Flemish tradition and the birth of the Italian madrigal.
