When talking about German Drum&Bass from the nineties, it is almost impossible not to mention the name MAKAI [* Mainframe and Kabuki a.k.a Frank Marheineke and Jan Hennig]. Within a short period of time, this production outfit hailing from a small town called Hanau took the local scene by storm, and managed to convert tastemakers from the motherland of Jungle to their minimalist and hard-as-nails sound. It’s been almost [more than/ed. ] ten years since we released our most infamous track to date, “Beneath the Mask”. In a genre with a short attention span like Drum&Bass this is a very long time. But it still happens regularly that when somebody comes up and asks if I could play “that tune with the Chinese vocals”. And even though those vocals are not Chinese but sung in ancient Japanese language and harmonized in the style of Bulgarian folk music, it’s obvious what they want to hear. Recently often refered to as the AKIRA song it actually comes from the GHOST IN THE SHELL theme "Making of a Cyborg" by KENJI KAWAI.
