Malling/Black - Melodic power-pop in bright colors.
What do you call a style mixed of rock guitar, electronica, heavenly pop melodies with a strong yet vulnerable vocal on top?
Based in the small city of Skælskør (Skaelskoer) in Denmark – home town to Jan Black and Søren Malling, the duo Malling/Black now returns to the musical scene, after 27 years of silence.
It was in the early 90’s when Jan Black needed a singer to do the vocals for the pop tunes he had recorded. Søren’s older sister knew Søren was a talented singer from listening to him singing in their childhood home, and she suggested Jan contact Søren. Both knowing each other from the local football club, it didn’t take long before Søren found himself in Jan’s home studio.
But Søren and Jan soon felt the urge to form a real rock band, and the formation of the band Carisma was soon after a reality, inspired by the 80’s and 90’ hard rock and heavy metal music. But Søren left the band again in 1993.
The duo continued to work together afterwards, now returning to pop music, all along both being part of other musical projects in different musical genres, and the work resulted in a CD release “Black Paint” in 1995.
“Well, we can't deny the influence of 80s sounds in the music,” Jan Black explains. “Both Søren and I grew up in the 80s to the sound of Electric Light Orchestra, Depeche Mode, and A-ha just to mention a few. But we have always listened to lots of various music genres.”
