This Australian band was formerly known as Tensey’s Fancy. Mara Kiek (vocals, tapan, darrabukka, tambourine), James Llewelyn Kiek (bouzouki, guitar, bass), Jim Denly (flute, alto-saxophone, darrabukka, denleyphone), Mike Haughton (recorder, tenor, soprano saxophone, vocals) and Paul Miller recorded this unit’s sole release, a self-titled album issued in 1984. After recruiting Danny Thompson (b. 4 April 1939, Teignmouth, Devon, England; double bass) in place of Miller, they released two acclaimed albums as Mara!, adopting a highly original style encompassing a whole range of musical influences, including songs and tunes from France, Persia, Greece and Macedonia. Whether performing the 15th-century ballad ‘Riturnella’ or a more contemporary song, Mara! successfully displayed a clever marriage of European music and jazz influences. Steve Elphick replaced Thompson on subsequent releases.
