Mare is a three piece band from Portland, Oregon who are single handedly responsible for spawning the world's most new and exciting genre “Horse Metal”. Mare’s sound is influenced by a range of artists including Black Sabbath, Mazzy Star and Sleep. Fans have described the band as something between Warpaint and Acid King.
Mare began one afternoon as founding members Lisa Koluvek and Angie Fritz were trading swigs out of a flask behind a record store. Contemplating what a band called “Mare” would sound like, they concluded it would be horse metal for horse girls, whatever that meant. From there the two called up Carol Jones, and the equine trinity was realized. While all three women come from somewhat different backgrounds and interests, it turned out that the commonalities that brought about their friendship were also a good basis for making music.
Mare is about taking a hypermasculine genre like metal, and using it to champion femininity. Using the term “horse girl”, which is commonly used as a symbol to ridicule and devalue femininity, Mare seeks to create a new space where listeners can question the place of ego in music, let go, get creative, and just enjoy the ride.
