Fronted by The Voice (Team Dan + Shay) and American Idol favorite Ryan Argast the Alternative Pop Rock band, Marina City, is rounded out by Eric Somers-Urrea on drums, and guitarist Todor Birindjiev. With dark brooding production, genre-bending prowess, and powerful vocal delivery, MARINA CITY is a refreshing alternative rock band that reflects a melting pot of influences. Their statement EP, REFLECTIONS VOL I showcases the vulnerability and emotion fans have attached themselves too when seeing their explosive live performances. The opening track “Who Are You Now?” serves as a “kick-in-the-teeth” introduction to the band with Argast’s grit and soul baring through every word. The addicting guitar riff establishes the band’s sound as Birindjiev assures every song must have a riff that can’t be easily forgotten.
“I’m So Broke” validates Marina City is not a one trick pony. Their poppier side still comes with dark undertones, introspective lyrics, and cutting riffs however it’s Somers-Urrea’s grooves that tear through the speakers.
The final track, “Stay” strips back the three piece to just their aching nostalgia. Without much shielding Argast, his intimate falsetto cracks and breaks as he gazes at the good times quickly passing by. The finale rounds out REFLECTIONS VOL 1 and Marina City as a band whose focus isn’t on producing the same sound every song but rather picking at a new emotion the listener didn’t even realize they had.
