“Loose Translation” continues where the last album left off, following roughly a year after it. However, many of these songs have been in progress for years, and three of them are new versions of old songs. The stylistic range is perhaps a bit greater, spanning between punk pop and folk. “Starting Up” is the 2023 dream-pop influenced follow up album to 2020’s “Shutting Down.”Mark Harrington released a number of independent solo recordings in the late 80s, and 2 CDs in the 90s: 1993's ‘Capricorn Flakes’ and 1999's ‘Trash Icon.’ The immediacy of the guitar-driven "alt-pop/rock" was preserved despite the use of electronics. Mark's voice has drawn comparisons to early David Bowie, and Peter Murphy , while the lyrics maintain a quirky sense of humor. Mark Harrington has recorded 2 cover songs that have gotten some attention: a cover of Gary Numan's Cars (on Trash Icon), and David Bowie's Changes (on Rubbernekkerz: 33 1/3rd). The 3rd CD release, ‘Alter,’ had a much smoother production than the intentionally-raw 2nd release ‘Trash Icon.’
