Charlotte rapper and Nipsey Hussle protégé Mark Savage decided to pursue a career in rap music after his sister was murdered. Mark Savage was born Mark Sanders Jr in Hidden Valley, a particularly rough neighborhood on Charlotte’s north side. His inspiration for wanting to rap came from the success of one of his best friends, Ree Da Don, a Charlotte artist who was murdered. Musically speaking, however, Smoke Camp -- Detroit Natives -- had the biggest impact on him. Savage embarked on his professional career around 2016 when he released “Currency”, under the moniker Savage. He released the regional hit "Hungry" around the same time Smoke Camp Chino was indicted on federal charges.
