The Maroon Commandos were founded in 1970 by a group of active soldiers to perform Swahili pop covers. Several of their members were killed in a tragic road accident in 1972, but the group rallied and in 1977 enjoyed a massive hit with "Charonyi Ni Wasi." The group members, who are all still in the military, are a flexible and experimental outfit and have blended various Kenyan musical styles including benga and Swahili. ~ Leon Jackson, Rovi
