Boykan studied at Harvard with <a href="spotify:artist:6TaiLV0CFJSuRhPfFLhnY8">Piston</a> and at Yale with Hindemith, and accepted a position at Brandeis University in 1957. His compositions are in a serial style influenced by <a href="spotify:artist:7ie36YytMoKtPiL7tUvmoE">Stravinsky</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:6cg7ooZDeSSLYVTWGpASjX">Webern</a> and are noted for their long melodic lines. Many of his works are long pieces for small ensembles such as quartets.
