Mala is the alter ego of singer-songwriter Martina Lucic, born in Croatia and raised in the Netherlands. In 1994 during the Yugoslav civil war, Martina and her family fled. Though she has no memories of the war, she has felt the pain and sadness her family experienced, as well as the hope and endless love for each other.
Her last album was released on April 22, 2022. After a series of candid interviews with people who have also fled, she went into the studio to give the joys and sorrows of these people a place in her music. The result is The Untold Stories, an album and book in one, in which the combination of interviews, personal portrait photos and music from the heart leaves the reader/listener with a sense of connection.
That is also the message that runs like a red thread through these life stories: have understanding for each other, talk to your fellow man and judge less. After all, you never know what story someone is carrying with them.
Some reviews about Mala:
"Down to earth and great music."
"Heard her today at Café de Haas in Voerendaal, music that really enters your soul, great voice, I really enjoyed."
"Heard her today at Struinen in de Tuinen in Maastricht, I got tears in my eyes from her last song Black Stains."
"Pure, emotion and fun are three of the many words that came to mind when I saw Mala live. Enjoyed until the last minute."
