Midwesterner Matt Dougherty writes and performs as Matt Skerk, a nod to his mother’s maiden name. He picked up his first guitar in high school and began writing songs influenced by indie folk favorites like Iron & Wine and Nick Drake, along with the early songwriting of James Taylor and the quieter corners of Bruce Springsteen’s catalog. In college, he was the co-lead songwriter, vocalist, and rhythm guitarist for a band called All Matter in Athens, Ohio, performing in coffee houses and local bars.
After college, Matt joined Teach For America, teaching elementary school in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas. There, he started a guitar club for his students and played a handful of solo gigs along the U.S.–Mexico border. Today, he continues working in education while writing and performing music on the side—familial, sylvan songs meant to keep you company rather than demand the spotlight. He has returned to the Midwest, and you might see him playing at intimate venues around Milwaukee, Wisconsin or Cleveland, Ohio.
