Creative people tend to have a central passion. For me, this passion has shifted over time. In my early 20’s I had a few years in which my focus was cycling, getting a chance to join the US National Team. Sensing (correctly I’m sure!) that my path was not true enough to make the 1984 Olympics, I returned to school. That academic turn accounted for a long stretch, more than 30 years in which I worked to obtain a PhD in physics and then as a climate scientist, first at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and then at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Other things happened along the way. I had children, which had something to do with buying a guitar in order to play three chord folk songs with them. In 2009 I wrote my first song, and have been writing steadily since.
The path from cyclist to scientist to songwriter actually makes some sense, at least to me. I’ve always been drawn to the arts, even if I didn’t have the constitution to plunge into those waters for the duration of a career. Instead, I married an artist (we’ve been together more than 40 years!), have been surrounded by the arts for my entire adult life.
I’ve grown to love playing music with others. And songwriting and performing have become my means of creative expression.
