The Matthew R. Smith Trio, consisting of Matt Smith on bass/compositions, John Sheehy on piano and Eric Ficarra on drums, is one of the most exciting and exhilarating jazz trios performing today. Since 2018, they have pushed the boundaries of modern jazz with a blend of deep grooves, strong melodies, rhythmic complexity, abstract textures and dynamic contrasts. They have recorded and released two albums; Vernal Equinox in 2019 and Action Brings Good Fortune in 2022. They have performed in New York City, Philadelphia and New Jersey clubs such as Feinstein's 54 Below, Williamsburg Music Center, Chris' Jazz Cafe, The One 16th and many more. New album coming in 2025.
