A guitarist who grew up in northern Sweden, Mattias Windemo is a flexible and risk-taking improviser whose areas of interest range from electric fusion to post-bop and avant-garde jazz. Windemo, whose airy sound has been compared to <a href="spotify:artist:3t58jfUhoMLYVO14XaUFLA">Pat Metheny</a>, was born in the town of Sandviken and moved to Stockholm after being accepted to Sweden's prestigious Royal Academy of Music at the age of 17. He was only 20 when he teamed up with fellow Swedish musician Jan Helge in 1990, and built a special twin-neck guitar that allowed a guitarist to play with one hand on each fingerboard, much like a keyboardist. Windemo played his instrument in various jazz settings around Stockholm, and at 27, he recorded his promising debut album Water Story for Amigo Musik.
