Home-recorded in the dead of night, Ethiopian-Swedish producer-songwriter Mattstranger’s debut album Perfect Blue drifts in the morning fog with melancholic slide guitar and Mattstranger’s far off in the distance. Named after the film he was planning on watching with his former lover just before they broke up, his music is the bitter aftertaste of something that was once so sweet. Released on Mejiwahn’s label Hot Record Socicte, he describes the record as “a cold beach where you’ve once had fun summers, but now summer is coming to an end and the beach is blue.”
His love for video games comes through in the bubbly, spacey synths of ‘Super Famicom II Mantra’ as well as ‘Moon Song’, a track about waiting for someone to come home while nodding to The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.
