If you like contemporary jazz, then this is not the band for you. Born from the ashes of 80’s hair bands transitioning to the awakening of 90’s grunge, Maydaze was neither of those things. Ray James, Mick Stifter, Richie Bolmat and Matt Adams gave us a straight up solid rock band, and they will be best remembered for their cover of the David Bowie hit, Space Oddity.
Whilst a big hit amongst punters, the band was not popular with venues due to their narcissistic manager Jennifer Stirling. To keep the band grounded, Stirling refused to allow them a rider, instead taking one for herself. This included a room 2m by 3m, with two kittens and a watermelon. She also insisted on a black and white TV and 3 Humphrey Bogart movies, the titles of which would not be given until 30 minutes before showtime.
The strain of two world tours covering Melbourne and regional Victoria started to take their toll. Rumours abounded of band members running over instruments in their cars, souvlaki binges and run ins with the Ocean Grove Police. Whilst never officially acknowledged, the incident dubbed "Hygiene Square" by the media is still reported to this day.
In the end it was an argument over the band name that finished them off. Bolmat sought to be more progressive with a 6 syllable band name with Stifter refusing to allow more than 3.
Ironically, arguments about band names would continue to haunt James, Stifter and Adams for many years to come.
