From the heart of the Midwest Emo capital of the world (aka Detroit, Michigan) comes a project unconcerned with lore, “waves,” or gesturing too much at what’s come before. With a boundless energy, hearty Midwestern work ethic, and knack for writing a lead, mccloud is a rock band in the truest sense of the word. Holding equal reverence for blink-182, Oso Oso, and a slew of 2010s emo revivalists, the group hit the studio and ripped through three immaculate punk tracks in just two days.
Buster, the group’s debut, was recorded by Tyler Floyd and mastered by Billy Mannino, two immediate signs of quality in the DIY sphere. The resulting EP is a 7-minute spitfire meditation on emptiness, anger, frustration, wasted time, and awkward parties set to frenetic instrumentation that sounds like it’s eternally flowing out of a Midwest basement. For all the talk of what emo music is or could mean, mccloud know that this genre has one job: to make you feel.
