By the late 1980's as the spirit and vitality of rock was dying, a loose coalition of young musicians scattered around the country began a movement to make pop music vital again. It was in this atmosphere, Men Among Thieves began its musical journey. By early 1988, it was apparent the band's unique sound was starting to emerge. With signature songs, such as Coffee Mugs& Hiccups and Terminal Bitch the foursome from Milwaukee's impact was undeniable.
Steve's soulful vocals and Beat-influenced lyrics made him a dynamic front man. John's Strummer influenced cigarette stained grit balanced out Scott's ethereal, mind driven bass lines and Joe's spirited drumming gave them drive without getting too heavy. To their critics, M.A.T's approach made no sense. But to their growing legion of fans, their music pointed the way to the future. One hometown reviewer stated "For a band that started out playing reggae-like Grateful Dead songs, these guys didn't turn out half bad." If you had heard early Men Among Thieves you would have heard a style that would’ve been recognized as a pioneering "jam band" style. "It was a long time before I realized that being in a band that people lined up around the block to listen to was NOT the way most 20 year olds lived their lives," recollected one member. "We just lived off of real music and imaginary money."
Imaginary Money is the bands first effort in 30 years, and the songs represent just a small taste of a time when everything was possible.
