A project that grew out of the roots songwriting collective Mercury City String Band, Mercury City Suburbs is the moniker for composer, songwriter, poet and video artist Sean M. Conrey's ambient and experimental music output. Through the use of environmental sounds and more traditional musical instruments and electronic samples, Mercury City Suburbs conveys and augments the texture and mood of common places. Their debut, 2018's Syracuse Derivations, features tracks composed between 2013 and 2018 using sounds collected in Syracuse, New York, Beirut, and New York City. November (2018) and the month-title albums that followed it in 2019 are part of a year-long, twelve-part project to release an album a month using only sounds collected from that month to create the compositions. Their most recent works, 2020's The Corona Tapes and Middling and the forthcoming The Dahlem Tree, are conceived as a trilogy of compositions responding to the Covid-19 pandemic.
