Mercury Plaza is a project of Kiwi multi-instrumentalist Jon Lloyd, who currently lives in London. Named after a now-demolished Asian food court that sat at the heart of Auckland's quickly vanishing gritty inner city, Mercury Plaza is a modern take on alternative, lush-sounding albums from the 90s. In the debut EP Secret Smoking, Jon plays with the juxtaposition of volume and melancholy rhythms, drawing inspiration from albums like Abbey Road by The Beatles and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by The Smashing Pumpkins. The three-track EP was recorded at Barker Studios and The Mix Room in Hackney, London, UK in 2019 and mixed and mastered by Simon Gooding (Pink, Dua Lipa, Phil Selway).
