Like the best ambient music, there’s often more to Metawaves’ widescreen drones and heady atmospheres than meets the ear.
The producer layers burbling arpeggios, subtly-rendered percussion, and alien electronic textures under the pillowy, thrumming drones that are fast becoming his trademark — you just have to listen out for it.
The project was birthed in 2021, amid the tumultuous COVID-19 pandemic, with the express intention of “calming myself and sharing the result with the world”. Indeed, “calm” is an operative word with many of these pieces: the drawn-out synthesizer washes create a sense of motionless quietude, while gorgeous, slow-motion chord changes transport us to a realm of stillness.
It’s notable that although the producer says “with Metawaves I am exploring something new”, you can hear his heavy music origins in the music’s powerful intensity, from the cavernous, almost aquatic depths of Breathedge, to towering peaks in the fittingly-titled Secret Blue Mountains, and the pulverizing hugeness of Lucidity. Despite this, the emotional range he traverses is still vast, achieving both profound melancholy and nervy bliss.
Metawaves’ music is a delicate dance between dichotomies: at once moving and static, turbulent and tranquil, a combination of surface-level activity, and peaceful, undisturbed depths. On one hand is devastating power, on the other, pure calm.
