Michael Garfield writes music for which new words must be invented: simultaneously tender and apocalyptic, chill and energetic, intensely technical yet vulnerable tunes marrying the singer-songwriter, avant-guitarist, and electronic live producer. His work has appeared in award-winning PBS documentaries, on the playlist for clinical MDMA research, and in adventurous multimedia collaborations and exhibitions around the world.
Michael has played over 500 gigs on four continents, including Portugal's Boom Festival, Australia's Rainbow Serpent and Earth Frequency Festivals, multiple years as the resident musician for Burning Man's aerial dance showcase, special events at the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science, Arcosanti, Moogfest, Meow Wolf, SFI, and The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors — plus years of group improv residencies in Austin and Santa Fe.
His unique electroacoustic guitar/voice/pedal work has supported a chromatic diversity of acts including DeVotchKa, Gaudi, Papadosio, Taylor McFerrin, Willy Porter, Mary Lattimore, Random Rab, Tim Reynolds, That 1 Guy, Zach Deputy, The Floozies, Rena Jones, Andreas Kapsalis, and side projects of both Beats Antique and The String Cheese Incident.
Other highlights:
• He was the first musician to stream POV video from Google Glass through a projector on stage, allowing audience members to watch the show through his eyes.
• He is the only composer to fuse space data sonification, AI, and multi-instrumental production in one piece.
